The feeding programs of Ciudad de Refugio have been around for a long time, but they are in dire straits presently.
Pastor Avelino Guzman is the sole survivor of the founding members of the Ciudad church and feeding program. His health is failing and it is all he can do to keep basic food staples available for the children.
That’s where we come in. MCUGuatemala.org, or Misioneros Cristianos Unidos, provides a lot of support to the program. Besides providing meat and other food for the cooks to work their miracles with, we strive to keep the program running smoothly and efficiently.
MCU handles much of the logistical matters for the program. This includes registration and monitoring of the children. Last year, we replaced the cups and plates the children use to obtain their meals.
This year, we replaced all the cooking utensils and some small appliances for the kitchen. Over the years, we also replaced a broken refrigerator and reorganized the storage pantry. Our friends from MOPS provided new cooking stoves and pots.
Most importantly, we are trying to keep this more than a feeding program. We want these sites to be safe places for the children to gather. They should feel like they are part of a special community that they can call on when they need help or guidance.
Through our counseling and education program, we want to provide adult leadership and resources to turn to when they have no one else.
We want these sites to be their second home. That is why we tie our mission to the feeding programs.
