Way back when I lived in New Jersey, I ate at restaurants quite a bit. My neighborhood was loaded with places, big and small, simple and fancy, and I couldn't pick a favorite.

Until one day, a simple meal of chicken, rice, and salad won my heart. And it did so without me sampling even a bit.

Instead, my church invited me to help serve the meal at a mission for homeless people at a nearby soup kitchen. Feeding people like the folks I met that day felt great.

It got me thinking about how to help more folks. It wasn't long before my FEED SOMEONE ELSE tradition took shape.

It wasn't anything formal or structured. And I never advertised it or asked others to join me.

Until now.

Today, Yesenia and I challenge you to FEED SOMEONE ELSE.

But don't just throw some extra money our way or into a neighborhood food bank. Anyone can do that.

We want you to sacrifice something- not necessarily skip a meal. Just think about homeless and hungry people before you splurge on a night out or a big dinner.

How it worked for me was that I would head out to my favorite oceanside restaurant looking forward to some sea bass or maybe some hibachi beef.

And then I would stop for a fast food burger instead. The money I saved became part of a donation to our church's food bank.

Or, if a fast food burger was my original intent, maybe I'd buy a bag of burgers and look for someone who might need them more than I did.

At the grocery store, I became aware of mothers with kids who spent a lot of time comparing prices. Sometimes, I would pick up items they put back and buy it for them on the way out.

Maybe you can think of other ways to FEED SOMEONE ELSE.

Does your child's school charge for lunch? Maybe they have a list of kids who are behind in paying their tab?

Or do something frivilous! Deliver a treat. Donate fancy cookies for a meal program and let them surprise folks during their regular stops.

Send a food pantry enough ice pops or cupcakes that every member has something special in a routine day.

Anything you do to help others will make them feel grateful and happy. But another reason to FEED SOMEONE ELSE is...

IT WILL MAKE YOU GRATEFUL & HAPPY, TOO!

If you've never done anything like this, I can't describe the high that comes along with it. Feeding people always feels good. And sacrificing a fancy night out or any "excess"  in your life to make it happen only magnifies the emotion.

There's no study or article I can cite, but I know helping others- especially to FEED SOMEONE ELSE- can pull me out a funk faster and longer than any drink or party ever did!

We implore you to treat yourself to not treat yourself, and FEED SOMEONE ELSE instead!

"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." (1 John 3:18)

The truth is that we can use some help feeding our children and some families here in Guatemala, too. If you don't have a favorite food bank or feeding charity, maybe you can do the challenge and hit the "DONATE" button above?

We're passing out 600 meals a week to those kids and dozens of bags of groceries to seniors and moms around Guatemala City. Our costs continue to rise for both the ministry and the mission family.

and don't forget to FEED SOMEONE ELSE!
